K Vitamin

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

The K Vitamin

The K vitamin is essential for the blood to clot to repair injuries. Whenever a person has a bleeding wound, it is the K vitamin that is present in the blood that stops the bleeding and enables most minor cuts to heal quickly.

There are three different forms of the K vitamin. The first variant of the K vitamin is vitamin K1, also known as phylloquinone. This is the form of the K vitamin that is found in types of plant foods. Vitamin K found in plant foods. The second form of the K vitamin is the vitamin K2, or menaquinone. This type of the K vitamin is formed by friendly bacteria in the intestines. Thirdly, there is vitamin K3 which is also known as menadione and is actually an artificial form of the K vitamin. All three of these types of K vitamin end up in the liver where it is used to create the blood clotting substances.

The best natural sources of the K vitamin are green leafy vegetables, such as spinach. However, because the friendly bacteria in the intestine makes one of the forms of the K vitamin it is extremely rare for a person to have a deficiency of the K vitamin and so K vitamin supplements are not needed by the majority of people.

Apart from the main function of helping blood to clot, the K vitamin, specifically the Vitamin K1, has an important part to play in the bone building process. This K vitamin is required to retain the calcium in the bones and redistribute it to where it is needed.

Although a K vitamin deficiency is relatively rare there are certain groups of people who may suffer from it. Newborn babies may not have enough of the K vitamin as they have insufficient bacteria in their intestines to produce it. The majority of newborn babies in developed countries are therefore given a K vitamin injection to tide them over until the natural process takes over. That is the only time that a K vitamin supplement will be taken by most people throughout their lives. However, an extended course of antibiotics may lead to a K vitamin deficiency due to the fact that the antibiotics kill the intestinal bacteria as well as the ones that they are being taken to cure. Again, a K vitamin supplement may be given if the course of antibiotics has to continue for a long period of time.

Pain Management for a Herniated Disc

Pain Management for a Herniated Disc

The worst part of a herniated disc for most people is the severe pain that can accompany the condition. Not only does pain radiate throughout the herniated disc, but spiking pain can shoot through the spine and the muscles of the back. Additionally, nerves pinched by the herniated disc can cause pain in the arms, legs, neck, shoulders, or head. Thankfully, you have many options, both traditional and alternative, for pain management of a herniated disc.

Medication Options

Medication is often the first line of defense pursued by patients of a herniated disc. Anti-inflammatory medications are often prescribed as a first choice by doctors. These medications will reduce the swelling in the herniated disc, which also reduces the pain caused by the condition. Other pain medication such as Tylenol or Aleve may be prescribed in higher doses than can be found over the counter.

In extreme cases, narcotic pain killers might be prescribed by your doctor. These are not often prescribed without trying other medication first, because they can be highly addictive when taken over a long period of time. If all else fails, steroid injections may also be prescribed by your physician.

The first assumption in pain management for any disorder, herniated disc included, is that medication is the answer. This is also, unfortunately, the first conclusion that doctors reach as well as the patients. Keep in mind, however, that there are many other, safer and less addictive ways to manage your pain from a herniated disc.

Topical Applications

There are many over the counter and prescribed topical applications that can be used for pain management of a herniated disc. Some of these topical treatments will be oils or creams that are rubbed into the affected area to soothe the muscles of the back and reduce swelling in the herniated disc. Other topical treatments emit heat into the back through a patch, which also helps to reduce the swelling that causes back pain.

Herbals for Pain Management

In addition to medications and topical applications prescribed or recommended by your physician for pain management of a herniated disc there are some very good herbals that can be used for this purpose. Herbal pain management is becoming more popular in recent years, as people realize that herbals do not hold the side effects and dangers of prescribed medications. Additionally, they often work as well if not better for managing pain from a herniated disc.

Oil of wintergreen is a great topical treatment that will warm the affected area, reduce swelling in the herniated disc, and offer some pain relief. Another great herbal that you can use is Chamomile or willow saffron, both of which are great muscle relaxers and pain management tools for the patient with a herniated disc. You can find herbal treatments and get more information about what will be effective in your pain management of your herniated disc by visiting your local herbalist or herbal supply shop.

Alternative Treatments

There are other alternative treatments that are often used successfully when trying to manage pain from a herniated disc. The most successful and often used alternative treatment for this condition is acupuncture. This is an ancient Chinese procedure in which needles are placed in pressure points, or major nerves and arteries, of the body. When done correctly, endorphins are released into the body which ease pain of all types.

Acne And Its Treatment

Acne and its treatment

Acne is a menace. However, it’s not something that cannot be tackled. There are loads of acne skin care products around. We can classify acne skin care products into 3 broad categories -
* Preventive or general acne skin care products
* Over-the-counter, specialised acne skin care products
* On-prescription acne skin care products.

The general acne skin care products are the ones that are used as acne-prevention measure. These include cleansers, make-up removers and similar products that help prevent acne. In the real sense, these acne skin care products are just those that should anyway be part of your daily routine. However, some of these are more oriented to act like an acne skin care product. These acne skin care products act against the causes of acne e.g. limiting the production of sebum/oil and preventing clogging of skin pores. Basically, these acne skin care products prevent the oil from getting trapped in pores and hence hamper the growth of bacteria that lead to acne. The general acne skin care products also include exfoliation products like skin peels. These work towards removing dead skin cells, hence reducing the possibility of pore-clogging and bacteria development.

Then there are specialised acne skin care products that are available over-the-counter i.e. without the need of a prescription. These include products like vanishing creams which extract the extra oil from the skin. Most of these acne skin care products are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne). You should start with a product that has lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5%) and see how your skin responds to it. Alpha-hydroxy-acid based moisturizers are also popular as acne skin care products. You might have to try a few, before you zero-in on the acne skin care product that is effective for you. If nothing seems to work, you should contact a dermatologist.

On-prescription acne skin care products are the ones that are prescribed by a dermatologist. This can include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical treatment. Dermatologist could also suggest a minor surgical procedure to remove the contents of pustules. However, never try to squeeze or do this by yourself, it can lead to permanent damage of your skin. Your doctor could also prescribe a hormone-based treatment (since hormonal changes are also known to cause acne). Such acne skin care products are known to be very effective in some cases.
So, with all those acne skin care products, tackling acne is not that difficult.

Hypnosis Weight Loss

Hypnosis Weight Loss: Some Ways to Stop the Weighting

Controlling your weight and avoiding weight gain as you get older are important ways to prevent a host of weight-related health problems.

Indeed, if you are more than 20 pounds over your ideal weight, you are at greater risk for a rogues’ gallery of potentially deadly conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, endometrial cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, and breast cancer.

What’s more, most people who are overweight tend to avoid exercise, and that avoidance just adds to the toll paid for extra pounds.

If you have a sedentary lifestyle and are overweight, you are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems. And, if you already have a medical condition such as high cholesterol, being overweight puts you at higher risk for complications.

The good news is that even modest amounts of weight loss can improve your health significantly. Loss of 10% of body weight can reduce blood pressure, high cholesterol, triglyceride, and high blood sugar levels.

Today, there are many procedures that can contribute and help people loss weight effectively. One of the known procedure in losing weight is through hypnosis.

However, many misconceptions have come up with regards to the application of hypnosis in losing eight. And because it does not involve drugs or any kinds of medications and surgery, many people tend to think that losing weight through hypnosis seems to be one of the safest weight loss program.

To know more about hypnosis and its effects on losing weight, here is a list of some facts that will give you an insight about what it can do to your body weight.

1. Hypnosis can be an imminently risky if not done properly and not utilize by people who are highly trained with the real concept of hypnosis.

Even if many people tend to think that hypnosis will not pose imminent danger to their health, still, it is important to know that the person who will do the procedure is skilled enough and that he or she knows what factors to consider before doing the procedures.

2. Hypnosis alone cannot eliminate excess fat from the body and, therefore, make somebody lose weight.

Most health experts contend that hypnosis should only be a part of a whole assimilated process. It should never be used as the sole weight loss procedure.

Moreover, one session of hypnosis will only have very minimal results on an individual’s weight. When losing weight, hypnosis matched with psychotherapy will be more effective than hypnosis alone. This is because hypnosis is only a state of deeply relaxing the mind, in which one can still be in control of his or her own body.

3. Hypnosis is one way of getting into the subliminal state of a person. When a person is on the “hypnotic stage,” the body is more responsive to suggestibility because of its intensified state of concentration.

However, this does not necessarily mean that through hypnosis, one can already “reprogram” the mind of an individual.

In reality, hypnosis can only run the range from trouble-free relaxation condition to proper initiation managed by a professional hypnotists. Hence, it should not be considered paranormal and magical in its upshots.

Boiled down, people should be more aware that hypnosis is not a sole effective process in losing weight. It is more of a facilitator of various treatment techniques.

Therefore, it should be combined with other weight loss management program to be effective in making people lose excess weight. In this manner, people will be able to lose more weight with a more relaxed and refreshed state of mind.

As they say, a healthy mind is a healthy body.

New Ideas in Herniated Disc Treatment

New Ideas in Herniated Disc Treatment

Herniated disc treatment has changed in recent years with the advent of such procedures as microdiskectomy. Medical research continues to provide new answers to old questions and problems. It is no wonder, then, that there are new ideas in herniated disc treatment.

One unusual new herniated disc treatment goes right to the point of pain in the nerve. A fluoroscope is used to position electrodes. A high frequency current if passed through the nerve. This damages the nerve so severely that it no longer sends pain messages to the brain. It is called radiofrequency neurotomy.

A more common herniated disc treatment is laser diskectomy. The laser is used to liquefy the herniated disc. The procedure has been used for years with much anecdotal success. However, no one has studied it enough to get it classified as a universally accepted treatment.

Heat is used to aid in healing of herniated discs by use of intradiscal electrothermal therapy, also known as IDET. The heat is applied through a needle, a catheter, and finally a heating element, to the affected disc. This is thought to reduce swollen tissues and small tears. Ultimately, this herniated disc treatment can lead to less back pain.

TENS, or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, is another fairly undocumented herniated disc treatment. Many people say that it works, but the studies just haven’t been done to prove it. Pads that conduct a small amount of electricity are placed over the painful areas. If it works the way it should, you will notice the electrical stimulation and the feeling of pain will subside.

Oxygen-ozone therapy is a new herniated disc treatment that is often used with injectable corticosteroids. The two treatments together can cut down on the volume of the disc to make it more comfortable. This can take pressure off the nerve.

One candidate for use as a herniated disc treatment is biological repair. It sounds like science fiction, but in this treatment, biological products are injected into degenerating discs. This is to help them to self repair through the use of the growth factor. So far, the procedure is still in the research and development stages. It hasn’t been tried on people.

Replacing the disc or the nucleus of the disc with prosthetics may change the way surgeons view herniated disc treatment. Rather than doing away with a disc and watching the form of the spine deteriorate, they do something about it. They can restore the spine to its natural functioning.

One new idea in herniated disc treatment is actually a resurgence of an old tradition. Acupuncture is making a comeback and is becoming more accepted in medical circles in the US. Thin wire-like needles are inserted carefully and systematically into your back and left in for as much as half an hour. Sometimes the practitioner will gently run a hand across the tops of the needles and you will feel a wave of relief. This only relieves pain, though, and does nothing to cure a herniated disc.

Experimental herniated disc treatments are not often covered by insurance. A treatment may be considered experimental even if it has been used for years, if there is no solid proof that it works. However, if you have the means, you may want to try one of the new herniated disc treatments.

Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

Many people with low back pain think that they have a herniated disc. In fact, only about four percent of people with a herniated disc suffer from low back pain. Most often those with a herniated disc will have no symptoms at all for some time. However, there are some symptoms that you may have when you have a herniated disc.

The type of symptoms that you have will vary based on the location of the herniated disc. The hernia may be located in the lower back, middle back, or neck areas of the spine. Each location of the herniated disc produces different symptoms. However, some symptoms may appear very similar between the three types of a herniated disc.

If your herniated disc is located in the lower back you may experience no symptoms at all. However, if the hernia is pinching a nerve you may have pain, numbness, or weakness in one leg. When pain radiates from the lower back through the buttocks and into one leg this condition is called sciatica.

Leg pain related to this location of the herniated disc often occurs in only one leg, and may start out as a minor pain that worsens over time. It may come and go, and it may occur as shooting pains rather than a constant pain. The pain may be relieved when shifting into a position that takes pressure off of the lower back.

If your herniated disc is located in the middle back, you may experience pain in the front of your thigh. This pain is typically dull pain rather than the shooting pains or intermittent pain that is particular to a herniated disc in the lower back. Typically no actual back pain is present with this type of herniated disc.

If your herniated disc is located in the neck, you may experience pain or numbness in the arms, chest, or shoulders. This pain may be a pins and needles sensation, a sharp shooting pain, or weakness. In other words, this type of pain is much like the pain that can occur when the hernia is in the lower part of the spine.

If you experience any of these symptoms you should contact your medical professional as soon as possible. While a herniated disc can be successfully treated at home in some cases, untreated herniated discs can lead to potentially serious complications and could even require surgery in severe cases. It is best to seek medical advice before continuing treatment on your own. At the very least, your doctor can help you to determine viable treatment options to lessen your pain and regain your mobility.

If your herniated disc results in weakness in both legs and a lack of bladder or bowel control, you may have a serious but rare condition called a cauda equina syndrome. These symptoms are typically present and debilitating with this condition, which often requires surgery. If you have these symptoms you should not wait to see your doctor, but call an ambulance or seek immediate medical attention at your nearest hospital or urgent care center.

Acne Skin Care

Acne skin care

Acne is defined as a diseased condition of the skin that involves the hair and oil glands. It is characterised by pimples, black/white heads, reddishness and cysts. Face acne can spoil your appearance to a great extent and body acne can really ruin your day by making you very uncomfortable. Considering acne as a minor problem, some people tend to totally discard the topic of ‘Acne skin care’. However, the importance of ‘Acne skin care’ cannot be undermined in any way.

Acne skin care should really start much before the acne actually appears. ‘Acne skin care’ is more about being proactive than reactive. Acne skin care is about being aware of preventive measures. Acne skin care is - following daily skin care routines with complete discipline. So let’s have a look at how ‘acne skin care’ can be applied to our daily routine.

‘Acne skin care’ starts with the most basic thing - cleanliness. So morning showers are the most basic way of keeping the skin clean. In fact, a lot of people take night showers too (that not only helps in keeping your skin clean but also provides relaxation to your body and enables a good sleep). If you are living in a hot and/or humid place, a night shower becomes a must. In fact, a shower is recommended after any activity that causes high levels of sweat to develop. It’s a very effective ‘acne skin care’ technique.

However, acne skin care is not about just showers. Acne skin care is also about wearing clean clothes and sleeping on clean pillows. Moreover, too tight clothes can cause sweat to accumulate quickly; so soft and comfortable cotton clothes are recommended, especially if you already have acne. In the same sense, ‘acne skin care’ also advocates regular cleaning of your make-up brush and any equipment that you use on your body.

Besides that, you should also use a mild, water-soluble, oil-free and soap-free cleanser for keeping your face, neck and arms clean. Cleansing is the most important part of any acne skin care routine. Cleaners are the easiest and the most effective way of removing dirt, grease, pollutants and excess oil from your skin; thus reducing the probability of acne occurrence. Acne skin care also recommends removing your make up using a make up remover, and this should happen before you go to bed (not in the morning).

If you already have acne, do not try to touch them or squeeze them; it can lead to permanent scars. ‘Acne skin care’ advocates gentle cleansing and cleaning of the affected area using an over-the-counter medication and a clean/soft cotton pad. There are various acne skin care creams and lotions available over-the-counter (a lot of these acne skin care products are actually cleansers). However, if these ‘acne skin care’ measures don’t give you the desired results, contact a dermatologist for ‘acne skin care’ advice and treatment.

The Right Water To Stay Young

The Right Water To Stay Young

A dry skin is one of the signs of an aging body. As we get old, skin lose sebum, and in turn, lose moisture. Drinking plenty of water is imperative for someone who wants to slow down the signs of aging such as dry skin. Any doctor would say we have to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. But most of them did not mention what kind of water we should drink. And I guess we ought to know.

What does water do?

Water cleanses our body. It promotes the efficiency of blood circulation to help expel the toxins out of the body. Water aids the body in swilling out waste from particular cells, keeping them in good state. While it carries away toxins from the skin, water also transports necessary vitamins and minerals into individual cells.

The need to rehydrate skin

Water comprises 70% of our body. Skin, being the largest organ, has a lot of water in it. But the body consumes and expels lots of water in a day. Because of this, our skin needs regular rehydration. The most powerful moisturizers are not enough to take the place of the element that comprises our body most. Not enough rehydration causes the skin to look dry, tough, and old.

Getting old

We get older since we are not flushing out of all the generated wastes within our body allowing these toxins and impurities to mount up within our body. For our body to operate and to maintain its temperature, we consume nutrients inside our cells. The chief ingredients of all foods, real or junk, plant or animal, alkaline or acid, costly or not, are proteins, fats or carbohydrates. And these are nothing but the amalgamations of these elements: oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen.

After undergoing the digestive and circulatory processes, these nutrients will be oxidized in the cellular level. After this, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen will all turn into organic acids: fatty acids, ammonia, uric acids, etc.

These acidic rubbishes are expelled in the form of urine or sweat after having undergone some processes in the blood. Regrettably, as a result of our lifestyles (i.e., too much stress, not getting enough sleep, not enough workout, too much ingestion, smoking, etc.), the body can’t rinse out all those acidic wastes produced in our body. These waste products build up in an area in our body. What’s worse is that we don’t consume enough fruits and vegetables which are alkaline foods. We get old by this process.

The Right Water

To reverse aging caused by acidic waste products, we should drink alkaline water. Acid free alkaline water or microwater is created by cleaning a tap water (typically with a pH of 7), and letting it go through an electroanalysis chamber. Alkaline and acid minerals found in a tap water is split b a device called water ionizer. The system would release water with a pH of 9 (alkaline) and another set with a pH of 5 (acidic).

Drinking alkaline water is one of the most helpful and trouble-free ways to flush toxins and delay the process of aging. Its effectively lies in the fact that it penetrates deeper than ordinary water. There, it dissolves and transports wastes out of the body.

Alkaline water is more than twice as effective as ordinary tap water. In fact, the effectivity of three glasses of alkaline water is greater than six glasses of a regular one. With this alkaline water, 4 glasses is enough to suffice your daily water need, and delay aging, in turn.

Home Fitness Equipment

Things to Consider When Buying Home Fitness Equipments

There are a hundred lots of home fitness equipment nowadays that are sold in the market. Do not make the mistake in buying something and then regretting why you bought it after a day or two. Home fitness equipments vary and you should always have one good reason to buy it. Don’t believe on everything commercials tell you about the equipment. Some equipment may seem easy to use on television but n fact will not really work for you. Try to ask yourself first of these questions before you grab your wallet and buy that equipment.

Do you need it? The equipment should suit your interests and needs. The activities that you will do with that equipment should be challenging and something to enjoy on. Buying equipment is never a guarantee that you will use it especially if it is something new that makes it harder to use. Make sure that you already know the equipment and that it is something that you already tried in a fitness club. Start from buying small equipments that are aligned to your interests.

Can you afford it? Don’t be fooled with the thought that you will be forced to use something because you spent too much money for it. Expensive equipments are never an assurance that you will use them or that they are effective for you. Always consider how much are you willing to pay for certain equipment. Also ask yourself iif it is worth it. Always check on the quality before you buy equipment. The price may be too low but consider that the quality can also be low. Or it may be expensive but then the quality is not that good. You can try choosing on cheaper alternatives but not sacrificing the quality of the equipment.

You may also want to check out for some used equipments. Most of the time, this is where you find a better deal. You can even find equipments that do not seem to have been used at a very low rate. Or you can find the equipment 3 months old but the price is almost half the original.

Do you have enough space for it? This is often what buyers forget to consider. Try to consider first where to place a treadmill before buying it. Before you buy something, make sure you know where you will place it. Your place may not accommodate the equipment. Plan ahead and make sure that the equipment can be placed in your home without causing any hassle.

Is it safe for you? If you have existing conditions, be sure to check with your doctor to make sure that the equipment will be safe for you. Some equipment may be painful to use and might cause harm to your body. So make sure to try it first be fore you buy it.

It also suggested that you first consider if a gym near you already has that equipment. You can save money by just registering to that gym and use that equipment compared the price you will spend if you will buy that product.

Buying fitness equipments should be bought with consideration. Do not buy by impulse. Always ask the opinion of a professional gym instructor before you buy something.

Success and Healthy Aging

Success and Healthy Aging

How to understand healthy aging:
Healthy aging is defined as a process that does not implicate disabilities and disease. Living a healthy aging involves removing these debilitating conditions. To leave this world of old age is healthy living. When you can go out without having conditions that end your life sooner, you have lived a healthy life.

Someone who stays active throughout their life can reduce aging symptoms, such as crowfeet, wrinkles, etc. The person can maintain activities and take care of self can also keep their teeth longer, at least most. Most active people will enjoy life longer than those who sit on the couch holding it down.

According to medical experts, the number of elders entering nursing facilities has decreased. Yet, people 85 years of age are becoming an increasing figure. Disabilities of people between 74-85 have also decreased according to medical experts. People 65 years of age and older has reduced incapacitating illnesses as well according to medical experts. This means that people are taking life more seriously, obviously; otherwise we would see ongoing conditions in society. According to medical experts also, the average person living active cannot live past “125,” yet the number of people living past 90 is increasing. According to medical experts the average life expectancy is past 90, yet some people manage to live past 120. This is due to transience conditions and its changes according to experts.

Ironically, common aging is complex for the reason that impairments and illnesses may develop through the process of aging. Some of the diseases that cause rapid aging are due to hereditary. One must learn the processes in DNA to understand and relate to this factor causing rapid aging.

One example of common aging is seen when a person eats carbohydrates. As we grow older, carbs will increase the level of blood sugar naturally. This is common, yet it is not normal when the blood sugar rises for a person with any type of diabetes. As you can see the senescence is obvious in natural changes, while it is not always understandable with unnatural conditions.

On the same note, common aging includes forgetfulness, comprehension decline, and so on. Yet, if a person has signs of progressive conditions, such as dementia, which emerges from Alzheimer’s disease, thus its clear aging is unhealthy and unnatural. You want to understand genetics to relate to this condition.

Our body goes through many changes, which in medical terms is known as senescence. Medical experts, as well as the general population find it difficult to understand common aging signs, since avoidable illnesses, accidents, etc, and non-biological aspects play a role as well. Unnatural causes such as drinking alcohol excessively, drugging, overeating, and so forth is factored into common aging and uncommon aging. Doctors also consider prolonged existence when dealing with healthy aging.

When considering healthy aging one must take in consideration that longevity plays a part as well. Longevity has changed since the 19th centuries. Nowadays women are living well past 90 and men are living well beyond 80 years of age. Again, transience or mortality has changed, which has increased living expectancy.

To live a healthy and long life one must take steps to reduce aging. One must take care of their teeth, and overall body and mind. In fact, taking care of your teeth and gums can reduce your chances of heart disease. Experts found that the teeth and gum link to nerves that can submit poisons to the heart, thus causing heart attacks, or strokes. To learn more about teeth and gums, speak with your dentist.
